3 Stoic Principles I Live By for My Health

Ok, y'all may have heard me talk about my Stoic practices during our chats together or on my podcast. There's even a section of my online course teaching the 4 Virtues of Stoicism... You may have even been curious why I subscribe to those philosophies and how I got into it.

Several years ago, I had hit a “rock bottom” in my life. I had seemingly checked all the boxes (college degree, steady income, good marriage, active in my church)… but I was miserable, living totally out of alignment with who God really intended me to be.

This internal battle started to weigh on my physical and mental health and also my closest relationships.

Why was I living my life for everyone else around me? I was constantly seeking the approval of others, sacrificing my own happiness, joy and health.

By the grace of God, I found an interesting path to serenity - one that taught many of the stoic virtues and philosophies. I grabbed on to the practices and teaches and one day at a time, applied them to my daily life. It wasn’t overnight, but eventually, I experienced my first Spiritual Awakening. I had been asleep, drifting through life like a zombie, waiting for someone or something to come along and rescue me… I realized that I needed to flip some of my beliefs completely upside down, take a leap of faith and trust!

To give you an example of some of the stoic influence on my health and how I coach others, here are just three stoic principles I have incorporated into my life:

1. Letting Go : Trusting the process, showing up with my daily habits and leaving the outcomes up to my Higher Power

2. In my control VS. Outside my control : We talk about this a lot in my coaching sessions - taking personal responsibility for the things within my control, building confidence around those things and surrendering the many other things outside my influence and control.

3. Discipline : I know how much you all love that word... Lol! But, the stoics often believed that joy was achieved through the practice of daily discipline (the habit-stacking I talk about so much). Having discipline in one area of life can transcend into other areas.

Simon, along with a close team of mentors, are building a global community of philosophers, artists and seekers who are dedicated to the Pursuit of Truth, Wisdom, Virtue and the Divine wherever they may be found. Simon is the author of The Poet and The Sage, which we talk about in depth in this episode - as well as a musician and composer. We also dive a little into spirituality, stoicism and the pursuit of personal freedom. https://www.thewalledgarden.com
