Spooky Simple ways to avoid the Halloween sugar overload.

The time between Halloween and New Years Day can seem like a flash in time. However, this period of two months can wreak havoc on your health and wellness. Less daylight hours, increased stress, decreased rest and increased sugar intake can all take its toll on your body. This year, get ahead of the curve and start the holidays off strong! You’ve got this!

Here are my 5 Tips for avoiding that sugar rush of the Halloween holiday.

  1. “Out of Sight - Out of Mind” : If you have already bought your Halloween candy for the neighborhood kiddos. Or hide it away in a safe place. Put it on a top shelf in the cupboard or pantry, disguise it in a box where you won’t be tempted while looking at it everyday.

  2. Swap In a Different Sweet Treat : Fruit is nature’s candy! If you are around your coworkers or family indulging in Halloween candy, be prepared with a sweet treat of an apple, some grapes, berries or cherries to feel a part of the group but much kinder to your health.

  3. Skip the Candy Altogether! This year, I ordered a big box of assorted small Halloween toys to give to Trick-or-Treaters instead of candy. I spent less money on these toys than candy! And I can feel good knowing I am not keeping candy in the house or giving away to kids and parents in my neighborhood. (www.orientaltrading.com)

  4. Give Yourself A “Break” On Halloween Day/Night itself - I eat a couple pieces of candy. (Shh, don’t tell my dentist). I know I can look forward to those pieces to enjoy on Halloween and I will not feel deprived of the enjoyment of the holiday. Once the night is over, I make sure I have a place to donate the candy or that I’ve given it all away to Trick-or-Treaters.

  5. Find a Place to Donate Oftentimes, military recruitment centers, homeless shelters, soup kitchens and food pantries will be happy to take your leftover candy donations! Sometimes even local dental or orthodontic offices will have programs to accept your leftover candy. Try posting on Facebook for suggestions or networks in your area for ideas on where to go.
